A Chat with the Experts: Understanding Autism

NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore offers Mental Health Forums on a regular basis to raise awareness and start conversations about mental health. April is Autism Awareness Month, and we are so excited to welcome a doctor and social worker from Sheppard Pratt to share key information with our community.

Jason Emejuru, MD, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Sheppard Pratt’s Center for Autism in Towson, MD. Prior to joining Sheppard Pratt, Dr. Emejuru held roles as a child and adolescent psychiatrist and intensive outpatient program medical director at Ohana, Center for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health in Monterey, CA.

Dr. Emejuru received his B.S. at Virginia Commonwealth University and earned his MD at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Dr. Emejuru completed his internship in general pediatrics at Tulane University Hospital and his adult psychiatry residency at George Washington University. He completed his child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital/Kennedy Krieger Institute, where he also trained at the center for autism and related disorders. Dr. Emejuru is board certified in child, adolescent and adult psychiatry and is qualified to conduct standardized assessments for autism spectrum disorder.

Tom Flis is a board certified and licensed behavior analyst and licensed clinical professional counselor who has more than 15 years of experience working with children and adults diagnosed with a developmental disability across multiple settings, including in-home, schools, inpatient, outpatient, and out in the community. He currently serves as the Clinical Director for the Center for Autism and also as the Behavioral Services Manager for inpatient units at Sheppard Pratt.
