The heart behind the glove: Danielle Gibson Whorton’s journey to support Autism Speaks
When Danielle Gibson Whorton laced up her cleats for her second season as a professional softball player with Athletes Unlimited, little did she know that the game would take on a much deeper meaning. Thanks to the league’s initiative to help their athletes raise money for meaningful causes, Danielle found herself reflecting on her personal connection to autism. This led her to something truly special: a partnership with Wilson to design a custom glove that would raise awareness for Autism Speaks.
Danielle’s connection to autism runs deep. Two people in her life—her cousin Hope and close family friend Cole—are both on the spectrum, and they have taught her invaluable life lessons. Hope, the youngest of 27 grandchildren, has been an enduring source of inspiration for Danielle. With her infectious enthusiasm and radiant kindness, Hope shows the world that joy is found in the simplest of actions. “No matter who you are, Hope will find a way to make your day,” Danielle says. “She taught me to always look outward, to help others find joy, and in doing so, you find joy for yourself.”
Through her cousin’s example, Danielle came to understand that individuals on the autism spectrum are not defined by their challenges, but by the strength, intelligence, and joy they bring to the world. “Hope has always been a normal little girl who has her own struggles, but she continues to find ways to spread joy. That’s the story of so many individuals on the spectrum—they just want to be included, to smile, and enjoy life.”
Sports should be for everyone, and by partnering with Wilson, I’m able to help make sure that message is heard loud and clear.
This insight inspired Danielle to get involved with Wilson’s Love the Moment campaign, using her platform as a professional athlete to shine a light on autism awareness with Autism Speaks. “It’s about inclusion,” she explains. “Sports should be for everyone, and by partnering with Wilson, I’m able to help make sure that message is heard loud and clear.” The custom glove she designed for the campaign is more than just a piece of equipment—it’s a statement. With Autism Speaks’ signature blue, a sleek snakeskin design, and the words “Choose to Include” etched inside, Danielle hopes to encourage athletes and fans alike to embrace the diversity of abilities in sports and in life.
The process of designing the glove was one Danielle will never forget. “Growing up, Wilson was the brand,” she says with a smile. “So, when they asked me to design something for such a special cause, I felt incredibly blessed.” But it was the deeper meaning behind the glove that made it truly personal. “I wanted to honor my cousin Hope and my friend Cole, who both remind me every day that life is about more than just the game.”
The glove, a beautiful fusion of style and sentiment, is a testament to Danielle’s dedication to a cause close to her heart. “It’s a win-win situation,” she says. “I get to play for something bigger than myself and raise awareness for individuals like Hope and Cole, who deserve to be recognized for their unique gifts and talents.”
Danielle, who will be suiting up for the Blaze this year in the inaugural season of the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL), said her message is clear: people on the autism spectrum may communicate and connect in different ways, but they are no less capable or deserving of love and inclusion. “There’s a misconception that people with autism can’t contribute or aren’t capable. That couldn’t be further from the truth,” Danielle affirms. “They’re some of the brightest, kindest people you’ll ever meet. Our world would be kinder, smarter, and more fun if we took the time to include them.”
By sharing her story and her cousin’s journey, Danielle hopes to inspire others to embrace diversity, show empathy, and choose kindness. “I believe God has a special way of blessing individuals on the spectrum to bless others,” she says. “I promise, they’re worth getting to know.”
And with Wilson’s Love the Moment campaign, Danielle is doing just that—one glove at a time.
