Autism Spectrum News shares tips for improving parents’ communication with their autistic children

When 22-month-old Kibur’s words and gestures began to fade, his mom, Mukri Yilma, knew something was wrong. He stopped waving “hi,” pointing at airplanes and using words he had already mastered.

After receiving Kibur’s autism diagnosis, Mukri enrolled in the World Health Organization’s Caregiver Skills Training (CST) program, supported by Autism Speaks. Through the program, she gained strategies that helped her connect more effectively with her son, reduce his challenging behaviors and better manage her own emotions.
