This week, Vijay Vasudevan, Autism Speaks’ director of data science and evaluation research, is taking the stage at the annual American Public Health Association (APHA) conference. As chair of the APHA’s Disability Section, Vijay leads a team of over 20 public health and disability experts to shape programs, present research and develop inclusive policy statements.

In a presentation to the Disability Section, Vijay will discuss the development of Autism by the Numbers, a platform created by Autism Speaks and Drexel University that provides actionable autism data at both the national and state level. This platform serves as a vital advocacy tool for autistic people, families, caregivers, advocates and policymakers.

In a separate session to the Physical Activity Section, he will present on the likelihood of physical inactivity among autistic children, revealing critical factors that impact their activity levels. Using data from the 2021-2022 National Survey of Children's Health, his research identifies correlations between physical inactivity and variables such as race, sleep and parental education. The findings show the need for targeted interventions to create more inclusive physical activity opportunities for autistic children.

In the Mental Health Section, Vijay will share insights from Autism by the Numbers on mental health treatment trends among people with autism, focusing on medication use and the risk of unneeded prescribing in the autistic community. His research shows that autistic people often experience high rates of being prescribed multiple neuropsychiatric medications and require a more balanced approach to mental healthcare.

Vijay’s work at Autism Speaks and the APHA not only reveals disparities in autism care but also shows the importance of data-informed programs and policies that prioritize the health and well-being of people with autism.
